Root Canal Treatment
What is a Root Canal Treatment?
A Root canal treatment is necessary when a tooth has significant decay or injury, leading to the death of the tooth’s nerve. This can also increase the risk of a dental abscess. To prevent further complications, your dentist will remove the dead or infected nerve from within the tooth root. After removing the nerve, the canal is meticulously cleaned, prepared, and sterilised before being filled with a suitable material.
Thanks to modern root canal techniques, many teeth that would have been extracted in the past can now be saved.
Am I a Candidate for Root Canal Treatment?
If the nerve of your tooth has died, you may experience severe pain, swelling, or sensitivity to hot and cold. In some cases, the nerve may die slowly, leading to minimal symptoms. Signs that may indicate nerve death include:
Inability to bite down comfortably
Prolonged sensitivity to temperature changes
A discoloured tooth
Your dentist will conduct a thorough evaluation, including dental X-rays and tests, to determine your suitability for treatment. Be sure to inform your dentist about any general health issues or medications you’re taking.
