Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)

A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) is a custom-designed oral appliance used to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. It works by gently repositioning the lower jaw (mandible) forward, which helps to keep the airway open during sleep. By preventing the collapse of the soft tissues in the throat, MADs allow for more consistent airflow and promote better sleep quality.

MADs are most commonly used for individuals with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or those who snore but do not have diagnosed sleep apnea. The device is worn comfortably during sleep and is custom-fitted by a dentist trained in sleep medicine, ensuring a proper and secure fit.

Therapeutic Uses:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): By advancing the mandible, the device helps to prevent airway obstruction, reducing apneas and hypopneas (partial obstructions) that disrupt sleep.

  • Snoring: MADs help to alleviate snoring by improving airway patency, allowing for smoother airflow and reducing vibrations caused by airway obstruction.

Advantages of Mandibular Advancement Devices:

  • Non-invasive and comfortable: Unlike CPAP machines, MADs are compact, portable, and easy to use without the need for masks or hoses.

  • Improved sleep quality: By reducing snoring and preventing apnea events, MADs help users experience deeper, more restful sleep.

  • Convenient and discreet: Small and lightweight, MADs are easy to wear and maintain, offering a discreet treatment option for those seeking relief from sleep disordered breathing.
